Goldberg, MD — Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon · Last reviewed July 16, 2026

What is a labiaplasty surgery like? For most patients, it’s far more comfortable and straightforward than expected. It’s usually done in the office under local anesthesia, takes about an hour, and involves a recovery of a few days off work with a gradual return to activity. This guide walks through the whole experience, step by step, with links to more detail on each stage.

Labiaplasty has grown dramatically in recent years, and more women are comfortable exploring it than ever before. If you’re wondering what the journey actually looks like, from deciding to heal, here’s an honest overview of a labiaplasty from start to finish.

What Labiaplasty Involves

Labiaplasty refers to changing the labia in any aspect. Most commonly it reduces or reshapes the labia minora (the inner lips) when they protrude beyond the labia majora and cause physical discomfort or self-consciousness. It can also include reshaping the labia majora and a clitoral hood reduction. For a full definition, see what a labiaplasty is.

Techniques and Who Performs It

There are two main approaches to reducing the labia minora: a wedge technique, which removes a V-shaped section for a natural edge, and a trim (edge) technique, which allows a bit more reduction. You can compare them in our guide to labiaplasty techniques. Because it’s a delicate cosmetic procedure, it’s best performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon; many patients are actually referred from gynecology offices.

Anesthesia and the Day of Surgery

Most external labia procedures can be done in the office under local anesthesia, often with mild pill sedation, which lowers both recovery time and cost. On the day itself, you take premedication, a numbing cream is applied, and the roughly one-hour procedure begins once the area is fully numb. See the full day of surgery walk-through for what to expect from arrival to going home.

Recovery and Comfort

Most patients take two to three days off work and ease back into activity over the following weeks. Ice and elevation help most in the first 48 hours, and prescribed medication keeps discomfort manageable. Experiences vary widely, which we cover in recovery and in how painful labiaplasty is. Because sedation is used, you’ll need a ride home and generally shouldn’t count on driving for three to five days.

Results, Sensation, and Follow-Up

When performed carefully, permanent changes in sexual sensation are very rare, and most temporary changes resolve within six to eight weeks. Sutures dissolve in about 7 to 10 days, and early puckering along the incision settles within four to six weeks. You’ll typically have a few follow-up visits to confirm healing.

The Bottom Line

So, what is having a labiaplasty like? Start to finish, it’s a well-tolerated, in-office procedure with a manageable recovery and, in experienced hands, a very natural result. Every patient’s anatomy and goals are different, so the best way to know what your own experience would look like is a personal consultation.

Ready to learn what labiaplasty would look like for you? Contact Dr. Dana to schedule a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a labiaplasty surgery like?

For most patients, it’s straightforward and comfortable. It’s usually done in the office under local anesthesia, takes about an hour, and involves a few days off work followed by a gradual return to activity. Discomfort is manageable with ice, elevation, and prescribed medication.

How long is recovery after labiaplasty?

Most patients take two to three days off work and resume normal activities within three to five days, with cardio around five to seven days and tampons and strenuous exercise restricted for two to four weeks. Full healing timelines vary, so follow your surgeon’s guidance.

Is labiaplasty painful?

Most patients feel very little during the procedure thanks to numbing cream and local anesthesia. Recovery discomfort varies widely, from needing only Tylenol to wanting stronger medication for a week. Ice and elevation in the first 48 hours help significantly with comfort.

Will labiaplasty affect sensation?

Rarely in a lasting way. With careful, superficial technique, permanent loss of sexual sensation is very uncommon. Temporary changes from numbing or swelling usually resolve within six to eight weeks, and occasional heightened sensitivity typically settles within six weeks to six months.

When can I return to work and intercourse after labiaplasty?

Most patients return to work within three to five days, or up to two weeks for physically demanding jobs. Intercourse may be comfortable as early as one to two weeks for some, while others wait six to eight weeks, depending on the technique and healing.

This article is for general information only and is not a substitute for personalized medical advice. Goldberg, MD",
        "url": "https://www.drdanamd.com/"
      },
      "transcript": "Labiaplasty as a procedure, and external female genital surgery in general, has been growing dramatically over the last few years. Some women come in just for a small amount of trimming, and others come in for work on both the labia majora and labia minora. In California, they've shown that this procedure is now more popular than breast augmentation. More people are becoming comfortable talking about it. There is no typical labiaplasty patient and no typical appearance to the area. One of the most common areas women experience dissatisfaction with is the labia minora, the inner lips. When they protrude beyond the labia majora, women can feel uncomfortable physically or self-conscious, and it can even interfere with sexual intercourse. Labiaplasty refers to changing the labia in any aspect, including reduction or plumping of the labia majora, tightening or reduction of the labia minora, and pexy (lifting) or reduction of the clitoral hood. Clitoral hood reduction refers to tightening of the tissue above the clitoris. Many women experience looseness of this tissue over time, which makes clitoral stimulation harder and can be embarrassing in appearance. Done properly, clitoral tightening has extremely minimal risks. Vaginoplasty refers to procedures performed on the vagina, most commonly removing excess lining and tightening the muscles along the vaginal canal, and can be combined with perineal tightening. After childbirth, the vaginal canal can stretch and grow. Similar to a tummy tuck, vaginoplasty removes excess lining and tightens the muscle layer. There are two main techniques to reduce the labia minora: a wedge technique that removes a V-shaped section for a natural edge and minimal external incisions, and an edge technique that amputates the front part for more volume reduction. When operating near the clitoris, the surgeon is extremely slow and cautious to protect nerves, blood vessels, and tissue. Permanent sensation changes are extremely rare, and any hypersensitivity usually resolves within six weeks, almost always within six months. Many patients are referred from gynecology offices; most gynecologists are busy with medical concerns, and it's best to go with a board-certified plastic surgeon. External labia procedures can be done in the office under local anesthesia with minimal risk, while internal vaginal tightening is done in the operating room. The main reasons to avoid over-resection are to avoid an open appearance, chronic swelling from removing lymph channels, and nerve damage near the clitoris. For most women, the labia minora can be brought at least flush with the labia majora. It's always possible to lose sensation with surgery, but careful superficial dissection makes losing sexual sensation very rare; most disturbances resolve within six to eight weeks. Patients can't drive themselves home if sedation is used and generally can't count on driving for three to five days. Avoid a lot of walking the first day or two to limit swelling; most people resume normal activities, including work, within three to five days. Labiaplasty is commonly tolerated under local anesthesia with or without pill sedation; internal vaginal surgery requires general anesthesia. Most patients feel very little during the procedure; recovery tolerance varies, and ice, elevation, pain medication, and anti-anxiety medication keep patients comfortable. Most patients take two to three days off work, up to two weeks for physically demanding jobs. On the day of surgery, patients take premedication, a numbing cream is applied, local anesthesia is injected, and the procedure takes about an hour, with Netflix or music to help them relax. Afterward, a non-stick dressing and an ice-filled pad provide comfort. For the first two to three days, patients rest with the pelvis propped up; urinating can sting, so a squeeze bottle of water helps. After five to seven days most can increase cardio; tampons and exercise are restricted for two to four weeks. Some women have labial hypertrophy long before children, and there's no single right time for labiaplasty since a future pregnancy won't necessarily undo the results. Follow-up visits occur within a day or two, at 7 to 10 days, and at four to six weeks. Tightening external structures can give some women an indirect effect at the vaginal entrance, but only internal vaginal tightening truly tightens the vagina. Sutures dissolve within about 7 to 10 days, though some knots may linger; early puckering or minor separation along incisions usually disappears within four to six weeks, and in the long run it's very difficult to tell where an incision was made."
    },
    {
      "@type": "FAQPage",
      "@id": "https://www.drdanamd.com/for-patients/resources/what-is-a-labiaplasty-surgery-like#faq",
      "mainEntity": [
        {
          "@type": "Question",
          "name": "What is a labiaplasty surgery like?",
          "acceptedAnswer": {
            "@type": "Answer",
            "text": "For most patients, it's straightforward and comfortable.
